Electricity Cost Calculator: What Your Appliances Really Cost

Which appliances push up your electricity bill? Pick an appliance, adjust its power and how many hours a day you use it, and enter the price per kWh from your bill. The calculator shows the cost of each one and your total per month and per year.

Find your price per kWh on your electricity bill. The value above is only an example.

How the calculation works

Energy (kWh) = power in watts ÷ 1,000 × hours of use. Cost = kWh × your price per kWh. We multiply by 30.4 days for a monthly figure. The wattages in the list are typical values to get you started; the exact figure is usually printed on the appliance label or in its manual.

Worked example

A 1,500-watt space heater used 4 hours a day uses 1.5 × 4 = 6 kWh a day, or about 182 kWh a month. At €0.20 per kWh that is roughly €36.50 a month. Cutting its use by one hour a day saves about €9 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my price per kWh?

On your electricity bill, usually listed as the energy or unit rate. If you have time-of-use pricing, the rate changes by hour — see our guide to time-of-use electricity rates.

Why does the fridge use a low wattage for 24 hours?

A fridge’s compressor switches on and off, so its average power over a day is much lower than its peak. The average figure gives a more realistic monthly cost.

Does my bill include other charges?

Yes. Most bills also have fixed daily or monthly charges and taxes, so your total bill will be higher than the energy cost alone.

What uses the most electricity at home?

Heating, cooling, water heating and drying clothes are usually the biggest. Read what uses the most electricity at home and 25 ways to lower your bill.
